Profile: Alan Haynes

Personal background
I currently live in California working as a meteorologist. I occasionally get
asked about comets and other space-related entities, even though my profession
deals with atmospheric weather that occurs from about the level that commercial
jet aircraft fly, down to the surface. Blame it on the greek word meteor,
which is a "disturbance in the atmosphere". For example, rainfall is called a
hydrometeor. I've always had an interest in the physical world including the
universe. My father worked for NASA when I was young and I can remember one of
the lunar landings conducted by NASA when I was very young. My hobbies include
science, history, and ideas, although I also enjoy skiing, hiking, biking and
weight lifting.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe the probability is high that extraterrestrial life exists, but I have
no idea what form it would take. If there is "intelligent" life, I think we
will find it or they will find us. The benefits of such a discovery include the
possibility of a better understanding of the universe and there's the thrill of
opening a door to the unknown. However, along with opening that door comes the
danger of a real or perceived threat to our (or their) way of life. Perhaps
another life form has discovered a way to overcome human challenges that we've
been unable to escape, such as peaceful coexistence or better yet,
symbionic/synergistic existence.

I say transmit the beacon, why wait? I don't know what we would send to
indicate to an unkown life form that we would like contact, an SOS perhaps?
Our position on this planet seems quite tenuous and we could use a little
help.

I run SETI@home for a couple of reasons. The idea of distributed computing
is intriguing and seems to be working. I feel like my computer is doing
something useful when I'm not around too. Of course, I would also like to see
us discover extraterrestrial life, if we can.
