Personal background |
I'm trained as a Chemist, though these days I'm in the industrial pump business. Hobbies include jazz bass and piano, and I'm building a homebuilt aircraft in my infinite free time (see the RV-8 at www.vansaircraft.com).
Why am I here? I'd like to reccomend Robert Zubrin's "The Case for Mars" and "Entering Space." These are thought provoking, and near as I can tell, realistic and accurate portrayals of what future travel and exploration might look like. That and the concept of distributed computing totally rock my world. I'm blown away by the power of a small client running in the background, then going back for more data every day or so. Wow.
I'm in a job I love, dating a woman I love, living in a country I love. Thinking about a universe I love. Yeah, life is pretty darned good. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
My educated guess is that there is extraterrestrial life. I'm less certain that there is intelligent life in this galaxy. I'm even less certain we're in a position to find irrefutable evidense of life at this point in the technology game. Though...I fully support the way we've started! Whether or not anyone will actually buy into any evidense Seti-at-home dredges up is an entirely different matter.
Because of the expansion of the universe, it's my opinion that if we're to participate in an extra-stellar civilization it's got to be in the Milky Way or nothing.
Assuming there is extra-terrestial life, and we're smart enough to find solid evidense for it, how is the world going to react? Extra-terrstrial life would suggest to many that we're not so special after all, and life is just one of those times where you input a ton of energy and end up with a less entropic system. Some would also argue that this prooves what a creative and fabulous spirit drives all of this. To me, that's just as interesting a question as the "how do we find and proove extraterrestrial intelligence" question. Are the world's wisdom traditions going to embrace the Mother of all Discoveries or are they going to drop the ball and turn inward? I think humanity will in general step up to the plate, but one never knows.
