Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) Yes I believe extraterrestrial life exists. At this point in our lives, I believe they will find us, if they have not already been watching us. The benefits and dangers issue is indeed a double edged sword that we as habitant of this planet wield. Finding other life could provide tremendous opportunity in regards to life sciences as well as many other social ills that plague us today. There is also a blessing to having a definitive answer to the long running question of life elsewhere. The other side of the coin is that of another world not being as noble as many of our scholars and explorers, but rather more like our drug lords and dictators, where world and planetary conquest is the norm, not the exception. - Am I raining on anyones parade?

2)A transmitting beacon poses the the same double edged sword as being found.

3) I run Seti for the hope that someday, life will be located and it would be a good feeling that I was able to particapte as an active member in that search.
