Profile: Peter Dierks

Personal background
Almost thirty years of experience with computers, makes using my cumulative knowledge to help others solve their problems exciting. There are a million exciting things happening in the world of computers every day. I am lucky enough to be able to keep up with many of them and get paid to do it.

Solving people's problems is a great way to spend the day. People call me for solutions. Often problems are unique, these are the most fun, but seldom the most profitable.

Computers are great tools. My first personal computer was an Apple II . In a testimony to early computer manufacturing, it still works. I cut my teeth on mainframes, ranging from a DEC PDP 8S to DEC 11's, IBM 360, 370, and System 36's, plus a few oddballs. Now the WinTel duopoly has more control of my computing. My primary machine is one with carefully selected components that I built myself.

I look forward to every day, and the joy that it will bring to me. My two young children are the greatest things that ever happened in my life. They are twins, a girl and a boy. Each day that I spend with them is better than the last.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Is there life out there? YES! Is it intelligent, some probably is. Has life progressed to the point of interstellar travel in our cosmic neighborhood? Unlikely. If it has, is the civilization still active? Should we emit even more obvious transmissions (than those leaking from our radio broadcast spectrum and satellite transmissions) just in case the installer life is friendly? How carefully did you consider that opinion? Have you heard of Bin Laden, Hitler, Tito, Cromwell, Assad, Dracula, Ortega, Nero, Khadaffi, Stalin, or Huessien? The list is much more exhaustive than that. Yes I have heard of Mother Teresa, Laura Bush, Sadat, Begin, Tutu, Jesus, Walesa, ML King. Do you want to gamble on the next intelligent entity you meet belonging to the latter group. Please don't make me make that gamble with you.
