Personal background
The study of space has been an interest of mine since I was in my early teens. When the Apollo missions and the Shuttle Program began, I enjoyed listening to the events on television and the radio. Television shows such as Buck Rogers, Battle Star Galactica, Star Wars, etc... It was during this time that I became interested to the possibilities of life in outer space. If there really is life out there, I hope that it is as intelligent as or possibly more intelligent than the genus that inhabits this planet.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do not know if extraterrestrial life exists, but if you look around you on a daily basis your really hope that there is a more intelligent form of life somewhere. If we do find life from out amongst the stars, I hope that life form will not be so unfamiliar that we pass it by. The possibility of meeting and learning from other life forms within the universe creates an interesting possibility. One problem that I have is what would happen if they were to bring a bacteria or virus that we could not fight. During the early times of our history, Columbus brought diseases to the New World and contaminated them with diseases that they could not deal with and likewise the other way around.

As for transmitting data into outer space, we are already transmitting information in the form of radio, television, cellular, etc. What we should be including with this information, is something about the climate, population, and other general information that would help others to be able to understand the chemical and biological characteristics of this planet. This information could be a determining factor in the possibilities of other life forms being able to withstand the characteristics or atmosphere of our planet.

Since I first heard of the inception of SETI, back in the 1970's, I liked the idea trying to see if we could find some sort of intelligent life within the universe. I think that this project could be promoted in a more constructive way, which could help more young children become involved in science. There is a necessity for concepts that attract the younger generation into a more imaginative and inquisitive world.

Very few people even know of the Programs such as SETI@home that need the extra computing power of the personal computers that are within the citizens’ homes. We need to have more and more people to help process of compiling the data.

One suggestion is to promote the project through the High Schools of the nation and see if we could get more people involved within the process.
