Profile: John Callahan

Personal background
Born in California now a resident of Massachusetts, I have always been
fascinated by outer space and the possibility that life exists throughout the universe.
I am 35 years old, have been married for 13 years, work in the heavy manufacturing
industry (read boring) and am an honor student at a local college which I attend part
time. John have been working towards a business degree despite my aptitude with computers.

I have many hobbies but motorcycling is my passion. When not behind my computer I
can be found riding my motorcycle around town or touring the countryside. I am also a
big fan of AMA pro motorcycle racing and frequent local race tracks. I also makes trips
to watch the AMA pro races in NH (which are no longer run in Laconia, NH), VA and OH. My wife Anne is also an avid motorcyclist
and even has a web site at www.gstwin.com.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do I think life exists on other planets? Well I liken that to asking if there is more
than one grain of sand on a beach. The question in my mind is not if, but when will we
discover or more likely be discovered. I imagine that we aren't that interesting right now
to other civilizations and that's why we have been left out of all the really good parties
on other worlds. I would guess that within the next hundred years or so we will have
progressed technologically enough to make the right discoveries necessary to prove life
exists on other worlds. Remember that 100 years ago the automobile was a prototype and
flight was a decade or so off, now we have reusable space craft. Just imagine what we will
have at our disposal in another 100 years. I do not think we should be attempting to
"call out" to other possible civilizations as that could be inviting trouble,
instead I think we will discover what we will discover in our own time. I would guess that
we still have a lot of growing up to do in the cosmic sense and rushing things may be
detrimental. I run SETI @home because it helps satisfy my suspicion that life outside out
planet does exist. I hope for a discovery but my hopes are tempered with the reality that
others may not be looking for us or want to be discovered -perhaps we are in the low rent
district of the universe and nobody wants to come this way anyhow. But it is still fun to
help out and that's why I do it.
