| Personal background |
Born in 1982 in Finland, in a small village called Pohja. Since then it was my home town for 20 years. Pohja is located in Southern Finland, some 100km west of Helsinki.
After military in summer 2002 I moved to city of Joensuu in Eastern Finland for university studies there. In september 2006 I left for a first-exchange-studies-then-internship pediod in city of Dortmund (Ruhr region, Western Germany). August 2007 I graduated as a Master of Science (with Computer Science as major subject). Since the beginning of September 2007 I have been living in Berlin, where I work at Nokia Inc. developing navigation systems.
My first PC was in 1998 a-then-state-of-the-art P2 300MHz. After that I have bought numerous computers and currently I own some ten PCs of difference age. All of them have been running Seti@home (the oldest ones for many years), but in late 2005 I made the desicion not to run Seti anymore on laptops because of the propable long run side effects to them. This and also my temporary stay in Germany has lowered the number of my running PCs to only few, but my target is to keep my account always active.
In year 2000 I did establish a team, which then became the best team in whole Finland. The team is called Universe Examiners. The team is very important to me and there's no day without communicating to it or thinking about it. We have had many activities with UE, and we still have, and I hope we will remain "in business" also in the time being.
My other very active hobby is Eurobilltracker.com, where I participate as one of the most active user. |
| Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I think Seti@home is a good project with nice premises and great implementation. There has been some problems over the years, but it's still going on and I continue to run it. There is no harm in running it, since it scales down so greatly. This and the idea of searching for extraterrestial life being has made me a faihful member.
After running Seti alone for half year, I got interested in teams. It was from the beginning clear for me that I shouldn't join some team, but to establish one myself. The team became Universe Examiners.
UE got bigger and more powerful. We built own websites (in Seti@home Classic times they were online), an active forum (today the main communication channel of UE) and an irc-channel (IrcNet/#ue). We have also arranged ten meetings IRL and more will follow. We are the biggest team in Finland in many BOINC projects, thanks to our many very dedicated members. Our core project will always be Seti@home, but we also participate in many other BOINC projects. UE doesn't restrict participation in other projects in any way. We encourage members to seek also other interesting projects and we welcome members from all projects out there.
After moving to Germany, I have been able to run Seti@home only on few computers. Before that I had several computers running 24/7 for years and I am sure some of them will be running once more in the future, when we settle down back to Finland. |
