Profile: Chas

Personal background
I’m a computer animator in my late thirties, and I live in
Toronto, Canada.

Although I never had much of a talent for math, I’ve always
been interested in science. I’m pretty eclectic when it comes to hobbies and
interests… but the ones that have lasted are astronomy and aviation. My current consuming interest is Quantum mechanics… to the limited degree that I can understand it hehe.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Growing up in Ontario I spent a lot of time looking up at
the night sky wondering, as I guess a lot of other kids did, if there was
anyone out there.

When I started reading about chaos theory, I started to
think about the ways that patterns repeat themselves on vastly different scales
both in our experience here on Earth, and throughout the universe. Out of that,
I came to the opinion that life – including intelligent life – is part of that
structure of repeating patterns of order formed out of chaos… and I believe
that pattern repeats throughout the cosmos in the form of intelligent life.

As far as when humans will discover evidence of
extraterrestrial life? Every day I think “It could happen today!”  What the benefits of such a discovery might
be is hard to say, but even if all we learn is that there is, or was life
elsewhere in the universe, then at the very least that knowledge might bring us
together on this planet, break down some cultural and religious barriers, and
encourage us to consider each other as merely “humans”.

Whether or not we should transmit messages as well as search
for them is sort of a moot point in my opinion. We are already transmitting
messages in the form of television… It just saddens me to think that one day,
Joe Millionaire or the kids from South Park may be Earth’s ambassadors to the
stars.

At only 172 work units I’m not much of a SETI powerhouse,
but I run SETI@home because I believe in the value of the project, and it is
exciting to be able to play some small part in such a great endeavour.
