Personal background
I am from Portugal. I live in a small village near the Atlantic Ocean, called Ponte do Rol.
I am a computer analyst and programmer.
My hobbies are astronomy, computers, electronics, science in general, reading, and music. Not necessarily by this order...
I heard from SETI@Home on the Internet. And, then, I began using my computer to contribute to the calculations.
Since very young, I like science fiction very much. So, contributing to the (possible) discovery of alien intelligence is, from my point of view, the best thing a SF lover can do…

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Well, of course I think extraterrestrial life exists. It's hard to believe we are alone in the Universe with all the space and time that exists to create life!
Discovering it is much more difficult than it's existence... Of course, we can only discover life when it is able to modify its surroundings enough so that those modifications are observable from a (large) distance. Intelligent life will be discovered only if we are very lucky (and very committed...), and when it gets sufficiently technologically evolved to transmit signals to the space.
If we are dealing with an intelligence much more evolved than ours or, at least, more evolved technologically, it's possible that we only "hear" of them if they want to be detected...
We should transmit a signal. Perhaps, the best way would be a satellite dedicated to that purpose. The information to send, would give an idea of what we are (I don’t mean only the humans but other species also…), and what we like. Perhaps, sending some music would be a good indicator of how we “work”…
On the other way, we are sending so much "garbage" that I am ashamed of the image we are giving of ourselves...
The SETI project is, from my point of view, one of the most important and noble tasks we Humans can do! I think it to be almost mandatory! It would be a shame if we didn’t discover anything just because we are lazy!
As a suggestion, (not a new one, I think…), why not create a constellation of satellites dedicated to SETI? The coverage would be much greater…
