Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
In my opinion extraterrestrial life is certain to exist, or rather to exist sometime in the history of the universe. The problem is that compared to the age of the universe the lifespan of a habitable planet is a mere tick of the clock, let alone the presence of intelligent life upon such planet.
So while there may be or have been life on other planets, the chances of actually finding one are very small indeed.
Then again, since coincidences do exist and finding evidence of extraterrestrial life would have a serious impact on the way we view the universe (which IMNSHO is way too heliocentric) I think SETI is a good initiative, and worthy to give my excess processing time to.
