I was born in November of 1941 and didn't get involved in computing until 40 years later in 1981. Bought my first computer then, a Radio Shack Color computer, and taught myself how to program. At the time I was a yardmaster on a railroad in North West Indiana. Four years later I started programming professionally on the side and 10 years after that I quit the railroad and began programming full time. When I first started running the SETI program it took me 40 hours to complete a work unit. Since then I have built a new computer that only takes 4 hours. :-)
I am married and we are celebrating our 35th anniversary this year (2002) apart. Both my daughters are pregnant and my wife is always there for the births. As of this moment we have 3 children, 6 grandchildren and 2 on the way.
We live in a small, old (1917) farmhouse on two acres in a small, (but well wired), town in Indiana. I work in Chicago. The entire family, including son-in-laws, are Everquest addicts which does cut down on the SETI production somewhat.

1. I have no doubt extraterrestrial life exists. Whether intelligent life exists or not is another question. I have no feel for when ET will be discovered. But I know that if we don't try, ET will never be discovered. The possible benefits are an exchange of knowledge and a reorganization of our view of our place in the universe. The possible dangers is an exchange of weapons instead.
2. No, we should not.
3. I run it because it is the only way I can help find ET other than by paying taxes for NASA's efforts.
