Personal background
I'm currently a Physics Major at the University of California - Santa Cruz and plan to be a teacher. I live in Bonny Doon, California (Santa Cruz Mountains), am an amateur astronomer, long time member of the Planetary Society, ride a Harley, am a musician and also married to a professional musician and if I listed everything I've done in my life, you probably wouldn't believe it. I have three children and three grandchildren. I love "pen-pals" and welcome correspondence.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have no doubt that extraterrestrial life exists. Whether we'll ever "confirm" it is, in my opinion, purely dependent on finding a civilization that has evolved to the level of radio transmission. When I consider that, on the scale of our earth (4.5 billion years), we have been letting our presence be known for slightly over one century. Life has existed for, perhaps 2-3 billion years, intelligent life (as WE know it) for only 500,000 years.

So, given that timeline...If life has existed for 1 year, we have been transmitting radio frequencies for only 1 second...

There are probably millions of planetary systems with life...the question is, how many with "intelligent" life and of those, how many with technology at the level of radio?...

We've been transmitting "beacons" for years, let's focus on receiving. It has a much greater potential for return.

I run seti@home because I'd rather put my "idle" computer cycle time to use for something I enjoy. It's a resource, so let's use it.
