Personal background
I'm an IT professional from waaaay back, when two dozen users shared 16K of 'core' and threading tapes into drives was an art form. But I got sick a while ago and don't work in IT any more. Now, it's just a hobby/obsession.

My long term career plan - what to do after I retire - is to play my sax as much as possible. I'm taking private lessons for the first time since I started playing 30 years ago and having a blast.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The universe is alive. Can a cell comprehend the body? Maybe that's what we're figuring out.

Who we are, where we fit into the universe, and why, are our most fundamental qustions. These questions are the basis of all religions. They can't be answered if we don't know whether there is other life in the universe. To me, the search for extraterrestrial life is our most important quest. Everything else is just survival tactics.

I wish I'd stumbled on S@H a few years ago. I feel like I missed the party, so to speak. I love the concept of a planet of networked computing power working on solving a single problem, especially considering where I started with computers.

In 1976, the company I worked for wanted to link it's Calgary, AB and Dallas, TX computer centres to exploit idle computer time, but it would have taken *days* to transmit the data by modem. It was faster to ship the tapes by air cargo. :)

I'm looking forward to possibly participating in BOINC.
