Profile: Randel

Personal background
Located down here amongst the foothills of North Carolina I work as the Dean of Learning Resources at Forsyth Technical Community College. When not at work (watching the dazzling color displays of my Seti screen saver - and fielding questions such as "what the heck you got on that thing anyway??") I play fiddle, pipes, mandolin, guitar and recorder with the Celtic group Naomi's Fancy, having recently produced our second cd. So far, our music has been played on radio stations in Chicago, Nova Scotia, Finland and New Zealand. Heady stuff, that! But not as "heady" as the contributions made by millions of computers sorting endlessly away throughout the world.

From this small speck of dust in the universe, I'm just glad to be a part of it all!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life is certain to exist, mathematical probabilities would tend to give it support. The big question would be whether INTELLIGENT life will be discovered, intelligent enough to respond, should it receive a beacon from us. And then, of course, would WE be intelligent enough to recognize it?

It remains, however, our commitment to seek out those secrets in our quest for knowledge - as it is our right to try. That's the sort of creature we are.
