Personal background
Information manager and Researcher, living in Naas, County Kildare, Ireland. Married to Caroline, with daughter Elizabeth. Interested in almost everything. I love the romance of space exploration, and believe that looking beyond our immediate home is one of the great human adventures. First heard of SETI many years ago when Carl Sagan's Cosmos was on TV. Inspirational stuff - I like to be inspired.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is possible that extraterrestrial life exists, but it is not for certain. I agree with Arthur C Clarke that whether we are alone in the universe, or we find we are not, either way "it's awe-inspiring".
I believe the transmission of signals into space is important. But for starters it doesn't need to be anecdotal or descriptive as that makes too many assumptions about the nature of possible recipients - all that is needed is a strong repeating pattern. We would then be transmitting what we hope to receive.
The SETI project is not just a practical project to collect and analyze data. It is an inspiring example of people across the world cooperating in an effort to look beyond our front door into the wider universe - it is the same spirit that sent Columbus and Magellan on their voyages, but more democratic, and in a spirit of peace.
