Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
With such an enormous universe out there, it is statistically improbable that life hasn't sprung anywhere else; in fact I think we can take it for granted that it sprang "a-lot-many-where-elses"!!
What I'm not quite so sure of, is, if confronted with such life forms, an earthling would even recognise them as such...
I mean, in a Darwinian evolving world, life has to choose its way through so many evolutionary crossroads, that from the same starting point a million finnishing lines could be reached.
Take Earth itself; imagine a parallel universe, with a parallel Earth, created at the same time Earth I was created. Well, if by some technological means a crew of scientists was let in on Earth II, the life forms they would encounter (if any!) would seem so surprisingly different from the ones they knew on Earth I, that they would as well be in an alien world!
And we're talking same starting point, same environmental conditions, same distance to the sun, same planetary mass, same everything; with so many pathways ahead, the odd thing would be if life had taken the same route.

Now, take something completely different from Earth and be transported there... Hey don't move an inch! You've just crushed under your space boot the microscopic megalopolis Capital of this arm of the Galaxy! What a waste...
