Personal background
Since I am merely a little schooled in various aspects of physics and statistics I am impressed by the ways Sci-Fi creates interesting perspectives on "proper" research.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Running statistics on the existance on extraterrestrial life is both difficult as well as tedious, but sometime gut-feeling seems to be good enough, does it not *smiles*

On one hand: the possibility for life in the universe, intelligent or not, appear to be close to zero.

On the other hand: we know for a fact that at least we exist, hence the probability for life is 1. (Less the philosophy introduced by this statement).

If life never yet would have occurred in the observered universe the probability would be very close to zero for it ever to happen, but since life actually have occured at least once, the probability for it to happen *only* once, given unlimited time and space, gives me the gut feeling we are not alone, or at least, we will not have been, or be, the only life form in the universe.

But that is just me, *smile*
