Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think that any civilization that has managed to achieve the ability of interstellar travel/communication must by definition have progressed to the point where they have figured out how to live with themseslves and would therefore be benevolent. I think the vast size of the universe makes it arrogant of us to assume we are the only intelligent life in the universe. We have already leaked our radio and television transmissions for years, so we have already advertised our existence.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
