Profile: Michael Machado

Personal background
My name is Michael Machado, aka slangfolly 6. I'm a 55 year old electronics technician from central NJ, where I've lived all my life. My main interest is amateur astronomy (very amateur). I do it mainly for fun and relaxation but I've had to limit the amount of time I spend doing this because of a neck injury. I also like classical music, computing, sci-fi and movies, movies, movies.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Given the size of the known universe and the number of stars in it, I find it impossible to think that we are its sole inhabitants. I prefer to view the earth as a tiny island in a limitless ocean that is teeming with life. I don't think we'll be hearing from anyone soon. The distances are too great and our technologies will probably be very different. Frankly, I don't think we, as a species, will be around long enough to find out. I don't know that there will be any danger since it may take centuries just to carry on a limited conversation. The same is true of benefits. The one benefit that will be immediate, though, will be knowing that we're not alone.
2. We've been transmitting radio waves for a hundred years. Anyone who may be listening already may know we're here and have a pretty good idea what we're like.
3. I run SETI because I believe in it. It's something positive and I like the idea that individuals from all over the world are cooperating together. These days that's an achievement all on its own.
