Profile: Julian Treadwell

Personal background
I'm a 45-year-old analyst/programmer from New Zealand, and a solo parent with an 8-year old daughter.

I've been a sci-fi and space nut since I was 8 (thankyou, Mr Roddenbury). Robert Heinlein is to blame for the craze persisting into adulthood, I suppose.

The green thing in the photo is a lorikeet that landed on my camera.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, they're out there. There are so many damn stars, they just gotta be.

That doesn't mean that we can detect them, or vice versa. But we should try, or we'll never know.

My feeling is that if they exist then they probably don't use a communication technology that we can eavesdrop on - it's more likely to be tightly-focussed beams of light, or something we don't understand yet. But if their planets have technology even vaguely like ours, then they are going to give off some kind of detectable signature, be it heat, light or electromagnetic noise.

One more thought - if there is an aggressive, expansionist species out there then they'll find us some day anyhow. Best we find them first.
