Personal background
I'm from Beverly MA. I'm 26 years old. I'm a web developer for a small Government Defense contractor. I have a BA in Physics and I love the fact that I can contribute (be it a small part) to the S.E.T.I. program. It's only a matter of time before we come across a signal that was intelligent by origin. I want to be the one to find that signal. Hopefully, my new PowerMac G4 800MHz DP with 768 MB of RAM will help the S.E.T.I. program find their ever-elusive alien.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Mathematical probability suggests that life on other planets MUST exist. My gut tells me this is true, however, only empirical data will decide for sure. Let's face it, if God has the power to create the universe with all it's complexity, wonder, and precision, surely God could've made human beings the only intelligent living species in the entire universe. I hope that we are not alone.

The benefits of such a discovery are mind-boggling. I think it will open up a whole new door to the soul of human kind. We will be enriched with a renewed sense of belonging and purpose of being. Most organized religions will have to be reevaluated and restructured accordingly. Perhaps that is both a benefit and a downside. The possibilities are too many to fathom.

Since the speed of light is the cosmic speed limit, transmitting a beacon of some kind is not quite a waste of time, but nearly so. Perhaps it would be more beneficial to determine a sub-space method of signal transmission. One in which the spin states of the intended receiver are instantaneously manipulated due to the laws of Quantum Mechanics. As for the content of the message, it should be extremely simple yet undeniably "intelligent" in nature. The movie "Contact" gave a very good example. Transmit prime numbers. Then optionally embed digital data.

I personally run SETI@home because I want to be a part of this historic endeavor. Pioneers push the boundaries beyond the tried-and-true and into the unknown. This is called progress.
