Personal background
I am a 57 year old Applications Programmer and Database Administrator, and joined Seti@Home last May. Originally from Michigan, I have lived in Maryland since 1972. While in Michigan, I played in a rock band called Wilson Mower Pursuit. Music continues to be my main focus and interest outside of work. Astronomy has always been one of my interests as well, going back to as long as I can remember.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
From the time I saw “The Day The Earth Stood Still”, I have believed that life on other worlds must exist. The more we learn, the more convincing that argument becomes. It’s taken man less than 70 years to go from the first manned flight in a heavier that air machine, to achieving extraterrestrial flight, when we put a man on the moon. Imagine how many civilizations that might exist that made that leap a thousand or even a million years before us, and how advanced their technology would be compared to ours. This of course begs the question, what would they do if they came here, and what would their purpose be? I for one, believe that higher intelligence inevitably leans towards the common good, and would welcome extraterrestrial visitors.
So therefore I support Seti@Home, and all other endeavours that seek to enlighten us and expand our knowledge of the Universe.
