Personal background
Hope I'm not the only one still slightly paranoid about giving away my full name on this 'high-tech' medium. Anyway, the rest is not so very secret. Í am a 45 year old, male, long year home computer user.
I am back again in the Netherlands since a couple of years after having had a traveling itch during which I was glad to be away for longer periods and live in some less industrialized and more laid back countries. Luckily I find my work in the transportation field very close to my house. This makes it possible to avoid the traffic jams every day which seem to be symptomatic for our 'civilized' western communities.
My hobbies are spending holidays away in mountainous areas (the famous Dutch mountains, ha, ha). This is now replaced more and more by breathing air through SCUBA-gear in (sub)-tropical areas. When I am home from work I spend quite some time not using the computer in order to give it a chance to crunch numbers for SETI.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why SETI? Well, why not. It's a very innovative and appropriate way of making use of assets that otherwise would go to waste.
Although I am certain that ET will be out there somewhere (What hubris to think that our solar system should be the only one where life could start), I am not so sure we will find it very soon outside the Sol system. Why not give it a try though.
I am saying solar system on purpose because I am very convinced that even during my lifetime some form of life on some other planet or moon within our system will be discovered. We will not find the equivalent of Einstein, Newton or da Vinci. but some self reproducing organic material or proof of it as having existed will be found.
What will we do if we find proof of intelligent life somewhere in the universe? Not much, I guess, in the practical sense for a long time to come. I am convinced however, that it will change humankind in its elemental way of thinking and perspective. Some kind of 'culture shock' by lack of a better way of expressing what I really mean by it.
