I have a hard time believing that we would detect extraterrestrial life using the methods involved just based on the fact that the distances that we're talking about to reach other life forms is so vast that even light doesn't travel fast enough for us to communicate effectively. Having said that, I don't have any better ideas, so I decided it was worth the extra CPU that I wasn't using anyway. :)
