Personal background
I´m a 34 years old systems architect from vienna, europe. Usually I work on the design of medium and large scale software projects all around europe. My main target are banking and insurance systems, but I have a few industry customers as well. At the moment I´m working on the redesign of a big swiss insurance company.
In my leisure time I work as an artist in a group named "monochrom" (www.monochrom.org) - we are creating video art, make performances and publish a very interesting zine.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As Prof. Harald Lesch from Munich stated: "A really good-looking woman is rare. And so is life in the universe." I believe, that life is spread all over the universe, but mostly in simlpe lifeforms. So to say: The universe is full of green slime. Maybe we are the only higher lifeform in our galaxy.
My personal approach to SETI were the books of the swiss traveler and writer Erich von Daeniken, which fascinated me when I was about 12 years old. I took my chance and joined him on a journey to mexico when I was twenty-two. At this time I was a member of the "Ancient Astronaut society", because I liked the mission statement: To find out, if there is extraterrestrial life, or if there was an ancient high-technical civilisation on earth or a combination of both. I left the society, when they dropped the second goal, but I am still fascinated by the wonders of our world, discoverd by journalists, that are searching the whole planet for strange things, although I admit, that the conclusions for former "visits" are mostly not acceptable for me.
In the meantime I am more fascinated by space exploration and astrophysics - especially because of the initiative of bavarian television (link: www.spacenight.de), that has a weekly tv-show with a popular program of the basics of astrophysics (in german). This program deals with all aspects of space exploration, shows the problems and goals, the theoretical background and much more information. I joined the seti@home project, because I want to donate some calculation power. My four computers at home run seti@home all day long - it is not much, but it gives me the feeling of participating in a great project.
Transmitting information into deep space is okay - it is useless for us anyways, because of the long transmission times. I don´t think, that we would get any response at least in our lifetime. But maybe it has some historical aspects for the future. And maybe the project gives us earthlings a feeling of being travelers on the same spaceship - our motherplanet earth.
