Personal background
By day, I investigate steady-state and transient nuclear reactor behavior for the local commercial nuclear power plants (it's fun... really, it is!). By night, blah, blah, blah [typical domestic stuff].

Nuclear electric power is rational - an essentially renewable resource with minimal negative environmental consequences. If you don't agree, I urge you to take the time to educate yourself on the topic.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As of this writing, nobody knows for certain if life exists elsewhere in the universe. It is certainly worth some amount of resources to try to find out whether or not intelligent life exists out there. The benefits would include gaining a truer perspective on our place in the universe... I do not think it is likely that "contact" poses any credible dangers, so we should try to formally transmit some indication that we exist. The idea of SETI@home is uplifting and expansive, it inspires me to think big and dream. Plus, it's an interesting thing to do with idle CPU cycles.
