I'm from Tennessee, but I first learned about SETI@Home when I lived in San Jose, CA.

There is no definite way to say if e.t. exists or not, we have no hard evidence (at least not that has been made public). I will not say life outside our solar system does or doesn't exist, but it is possible. As big as the universe is, there almost HAS to be something else. Hopefully any other life we encounter will be humanoid, 'cause if it isn't, I don't think the general population of Earth would be willing to accept it.
If we do discover e.t. intelligence, I think it would be like we are doing now - listening for signals. We should definately send many massive signals to be picked up by any other possible listeners who might have more sophisticated listening equipment than we do. We should probably send a few simple mathematic and algebraic equations. That way, they could understand the signal was intentional and intelligent, and they would have to spend time trying to decode our languages.
What are the possible benefiets and dangers of an unlikely theoretical situation? I would say there is an equal chance of first contact being either wonderfully beneficial or disastrous. But we've all seen tons of movies about that.
Last thing - if we do find, contact, and meet any e.t. life and we setup any type of scientific cooperation... once it is deemed safe by both parties, I would like to volunteer for inter-species mating experiments :)> |
