Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI is a societal work, requiring dedication, endurance, and cooperation among people and nations.

The actual search may provide benefits to society regardless of the result. Direct technological advancement and a general increase in scientific knowledge is a primary contribution.

Philosophically, the search itself serves to expand our own cosmic consciousness. Perhaps viewing ourselves as part of a greater universe can assist in understanding our own neighbors on earth.

If the attempt to find life other than our own is never made, then the chance of success is forced to zero. It may yet prove to be the most interesting and significant scientific endeavor of our time.
