Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Given the sheer magnitude of "known" space and it's "known" bodies, I would be amazed if there was not extraterresterial life somewhere. Humans will probably only discover it when they come knocking on our door, because the Governments of Earth are more concerned with other issues.
If, or perhaps I should say when, we discover other life, it will be a major upheaval in life as we know it. The discovery will stretch accross almost every industry, Government, defence, religon, science, aerospace, etc.
Clearly; it is more expensive to transmit than to receive. The radiated power requirements of such beacon could be enormus. However; assuming there are other civizations, they would also be faced with the same dilemma. Thus; if everyone is in the receive mode and nobody is transmitting, duhh.
I run SETI at home simply because it is the right thing to do. I am an aerospace research professional (SIGINT Electronics Engineeer) that hates to see those stupid toasters flying across my screen when I can use my CPU slack to be doing something productive.
I think the SETI program principle is basically sound. Underfunded; but sound. |
