Personal background
I am a 52 year old male living in West Central Illinois with my wife and 3 sons. I have been an amatuer radio enthusiast since 1975 and hold an Amatuer Extra Class license, WW9L. I work for a large telephone company in the Midwest as a UNIX Systems Administrator.

For as long as I can remember I have been gazing at the stars and dreaming of space travel. I am old enough to remember our very first space missions in the Mercury space vehicles. I was watching and filming the first landing on the moon in my living room in 1969. I remember, as a child, listening to shortwave radio and wondering what all of those strange and wonderful sounds meant.

Now that I have a computer system here to help in the search, I finally feel as though I am doing something wonderful and exciting. To finally a participant in history, not just a member of the audience.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
When I look into the night sky, I can't help but feel that there must be others, on distant worlds, looking back. The universe is too vast for intelligent life not to exist elswhere. I hope that alien life is discovered by the efforts of SETI, but I am afraid that radio signals are just too weak and disperse too rapidly for interstellar communications. Just as we developed, first with sound, then with wires, radio wave propagation, and now fiber optics. I believe that technology will advance to cover great distances required by interstellar communications. We first have to venture into our own solar system, to push that technology. Necessity is the mother of invention.

I don't believe that humans should transmitt a beacon. I do think that it would just add to the electromagnetic storm eminating from this planet.

All of my life I have dreamed of distant worlds. Now that I have a computer system at home, I fell that in a small way I am contributing to history. Actually becoming a part of it, not just a casual observer.
