Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We humans are extremely pompous in believing that intelligent life could only exist on this one planet within our solar system. There are far too many variables to rule out life forms on other planets within, or outside of, our solar system.
We should explore the possibilities of extraterrestrial life with all means at our disposal, within reason. I do not encourage sacrificing other programs to fund this search, but I do believe that we could utilize multimedia beaconing utilizing radio, laser, RF, etc. We could encode these transmissions with a simple repeating message similar to the universal SOS code, but comprised of more of a "hailing message" content (ala Close Encounters").
I run SETI@home in an attempt to be "part of the solution, not part of the problem". The project should continue moving forward as quickly as possible.
Would it be possible to furnish a fast access link from Berkly to Arecibo?
