Personal background
I am 36 years old and live in Colorado. I came across SETI@HOME while doing research for my english composition class paper. I needed to find a topic to write 3 argument papers on and struggled as I often do trying to think of one thing. I don't remember what I was doing when the "epiphany" came to me, but decided to write about the possibilities of sentient life on other planets. One natural place to start in researching such a paper was SETI. At their web site, I found the link to get here. Since then, during conversations about my paper with others, I was told by a couple of people about this endeavor. Since my second paper was to be a persuasion paper on what people should do, I needed to research using SETI@HOME as one objective. On October 30 I downloaded the program and have had it running since.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have been a bit of a sci-fi buff since I was young. I have read many stories and watched many movies and TV shows about both alien contact and man's expansion into space. If nothing else, I like the idea that there are other lives out there to meet and hopefully learn from. My stance on the subject is that we cannot prove we are alone, even if we cannot yet prove ET is out there. If we cannot prove it does not exist, we cannot deny that it could exist.
We need to try finding other sentient life in the galaxy. various listening devices need to be tried and various communication methods as well. We cannot know what to expect from other life if it is out there, and need to continue monitoring every possibility. Other life may not have evolved in the same manner we have. Other Sentient beings, most likely due to differing biological evolutions, may have developed technologies in a completely different path than humans have. ETs may have developed communication through light refraction without discovering soundwaves for example. Who knows?
If sentient extraterrestrial life exists, it comes down to two things:
1. If they are aggresive, we need to know if they head our way to be prepared.
2. If they are peaceful, we need to somehow establish contact and learn whatever we can, maybe even learn something about ourselves in the process.
