Profile: Jack Winans

Personal background
Retired 70 yr-old founder of an 9-yr old free computer center "First Bytes" at Berger Park in Chicago. I have 3 home computers and 11 at Berger, all networked with DSL. We offer Internet and computer access to all and have classes for children and adults. All Berger and home computers run SETI@HOME 24/365. I also put out a 12-16 pg monthly newsletter, the Malibu East Dialogue available at www.MalibuEast.org. It contains local and condo news and also features the "Balcony Man" cartoon by Chicago artist Scott Virzi.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Our exposure to extraterrestrial life is inevatable in a future we cannot envision.
2. A beacon for others to use to find us is probably superflous, as those advanced enough to find us must have sensory equipment far beyond our capabilities or imagination.
3. Why do I run SETI@home? Why not? It costs me nothing and lets me support this wonderful project.

With faster and faster processors installed in non-personal computering devices, perhaps SETI@home could become an integral part of these devices and be licensed to do this. Cell phones, auto computers, factory automation computers, etc.
