Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I think there must be extraterrestrial life - the only question is whether it is near enough for contact to be established. We already have a number of beacons - all our broadcast transmissions of course, as well as the few probes we have sent out that are or will be interstellar. But I think that as a compliment to efforts like SETI, we should establish explicit beacons designed to maximize the chance that they will be noticed by any extraterrestial life.
I run SETI@home because since the Apollo 11 Moon landing I have always yearned for the days of real space exploration (listen to Billy Bragg's "The Space Race is Over"), and for the chance to travel into space, and SETI connects me with those dreams. And it makes me feel like my computers are doing something useful, something that I really value instead of just wasting time and doing their little dance for capitalism. |
