Personal background
I'm a computer engineering Ph.D. student at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. I grew up in the small city of Chatsworth, but I got interested in computers (mainly because of video games), and I came to Atlanta in 1998 to pursue a degree in CmpE. After getting my BS-CmpE from Tech (Summer, 2000), I decided to stay to get my MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering, which I obtained in the summer of 2001. I thought "why not? Might as well teach, since I enjoy being a teaching assistant...", so I am staying to get my Ph.D.. I am a member of the PICA research group here at Tech, and am interested in interconnection networks for parallel computers, which I am currently researching.

In what little spare time I have, I spend time with my family back home and my wife, Sandi. She thinks I am weird, since I'm so excited about helping possibly find extraterrestrial life out there. The chances of my computer finding anything are astronomically small, she thinks, but I am determined to show her that I can process data with the big dogs. Maybe my computer will help find ET - who knows? Weirder things have happened.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think extraterrestrial life certainly does exist. I am a devout believer in one true God, and I know how efficient his designs are. There's no way God would waste all of that space out there with no life in it. There has to be something out there, even if their race is just as seemingly careless as ours. So why not make another sentient race and allow us to find one another? However, we have to be ready for a radical change in world opinion when we do find alien life. We will no longer be Georgians or Americans, we will be Earthlings. Our world will have to band together and stop fighting amongst ourselves, so as not to look like a bunch of hostile dweebs to our new-found friends.

On the topic of whether or not humans should transmit a beacon for others to find, I feel that we should not. I know I always like to see others coming before they see me - I may want to run/hide and not talk to them. What if the race(s) out there could be hostile toward us? Let's find them *before* they find us. Then, we can spy on them for awhile and see if they are going to harm us or not. If they are not hostile, we have made new friends. If they are hostile, we can hide more efficiently and prepare for when *they* find *us*.

I run SETI@home because my computer sits there idle most of them time anyway while I'm away. I had might as well be looking for aliens and helping out, and I am excited to get to be a part of such a massive computing effort.
