It's almost a given that life exists. We are too prone to elitism even amongst our greatest minds. We construct barriers across which we presumably separate ourselves from other species. However, regardless of where we place the barrier, sooner or later it falls prone to fact and must be replaced with some other arbitrary deliniator ensuring our continued reign as the supreme species.
Life is what the universe is all about. As we learn more we discover life flurishing in every nook and cranny we knew it would be impossible for life to exist. Where there is no warmth, where there is no sun... everywhere there should be no life. Every possible variation on the theme seems to seek to fill every ecological niche.
If one can step away from ego long enough to realize what a terribly insignificant role our planet plays in the universe at large, it only stands to reason that there are countless other variants equally teaming with their own efforts at life. And just as there are myriad evolutionary "solutions" to each set of ecological circumstances, there are certain to be many variants of "intelligence" as we choose to define it.
The questions are quite simple... it's the answer that's difficult. Are we looking for radio signals travelling across space-time for millenia, or perhaps something we have yet to discover sent to us yesterday and simply awaiting our notice. Odds are that we are surrounded by that which we seek -- we simply lack the awareness and/or skill to recognize it when we see it.
In the end, however, the answer to the question is really irrelevant. The answer to whether or not we are alone is an immutable fact. We are or we are not and there is nothing search or not searching can or will do to alter that outcome. In time, the answer will be known.
What is important is that we are looking. |
