Personal background
Hey all! I'm a Scottish cruncher in the heart of Central Scotland (Braveheart country). I've been crunching data and doing my bit for science for over 5 years now. It all started out with the original Seti@Home poject on a Windows98 machine, and have since upgraded to a newer / faster PC using Windows XP. (My Processor blew up a few months back forcing me to upgrade - as my chosen vendor no longer sell PC's in the 1.72Ghz range - they now start at 2.66Ghz which is what I am using now.)
In a way I'm glad it happened as it means I can crunch more, and much faster. No I aint greedy, I just want to do my bit for science and all those dedicated intelligent people who put so much time into the name of science.
I'm 34, live with my partner who is also a bit of a tech head, which makes life fun and really geeky. lol.
Hobbies consist of beer, music, Computing and Science, oh and more beer and music.
As for occupation, lets just say I'm chief engineer, Head of IT and general dogs body in my 9-5 mundane job.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As stated earlier I am now running a faster PC, it's crunching much faster and I suppose I am on the lookout to 'help' other projects.
The scientists at Berkeley need more people to assist with the outcome of the project, so that's where people like me and you come into the equation. In saying that, there never will be an outcome, it's on-going, and as long as there is funding, they will always be looking / we will always be crunching.

As for my viewpoints, I couldn't comment on Seti@Home project as I am a microcosm in the whole equation. I have been a member since October 2001, and all I can say is the project is big! I think when science embarks upon such projects of such magnitude, we all gaze with open curious eyes, wondering what it's all about, and wondering whether it's all really worth it. The pros, the cons, the outcome etc.
The big bang has inspired and baffled so many people, and it's only natural for humans to investigate and seek answers. We sure as hell aint alone in this vast universe.
We as a human race, are naturally inquisative, and the least we poor thicko's who don't have a clue about space can do, is dedicate our processing time to crunching, and help the cause.

Keep on crunching, and if you are new here, tell a friend. (or several)

Peace.
