Personal background
I am currently a student at the University of Central Arkansas. I'm a non-traditional student...I'm 26. I'm really into Debian/GNU linux at the moment (but I'm a Linux person in general).
I have a 19 month old son and my wife attends school also. I am working on a Computer Science degree (with a Mathematics minor). I drive a 1968 VW Bug and I really can't see myself driving anything else.
I like Star Trek TNG...I guess I'm a dork (or geek, or whatever), but I wouldn't have it any other way.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think it's reasonable to assume that life as we know it exsists somewhere other than Earth. There may not be any other life in our galaxy, but I would say that there is a 100% chance that life exists somewhere in the universe.
It's difficult to imagine if humans will ever find (or be found by) extraterrestrial life. Personally, I don't know that the human race could deal with a discovery of that magnitude. Humans seem unwilling to accept the idea that they are not the center of the universe, even though it appears to be obvious. I think that humans will not accept the exsistence of other life. I think that we would destroy other life in a heartbeat as opposed to accepting it...but I hope I'm wrong.
My own selfishness says that humans should make every possible attempt to contact other life...a stationary beacon of some sort would be a good idea...maybe something that would stay in one place so that the galaxy will travel to the beacon rather than the opposite. But I do think that the beacon should have warnings...humans are not ready to accept extraterrestrial life, but it should also say that we will change in time. It should have our hopes and dreams...our daily lives. It would be ideal if everyone could put a piece of their personality on the beacon...
I run setiathome to put my processor to work. I like the idea that my computer is doing something more significant than displaying web pages and what-not.
