Personal background
Just checked my profile for the first time in almost 10 years. Probably time for an update so I can then ignore it for another 10. I am a geophysicist completing my PhD at the Colorado School of Mines (I was a sophomore undergraduate when last I updated this). I am also a research geophysicist for the US Geological Survey. I play around in amateur astronomy (read: I have a telescope), but I am also building a radio telescope. My other hobbies include working, bike racing (mostly road), and brewing beer.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists as a statistical probability. However, I do not believe that any communication or understanding between species would be possible any more than you could talk to a plant.
I run seti@home in case I am wrong. Someone obviously believes that it is possible (ie they wrote this program), so I will support their research in the name of science.
