Profile: Norrie Batchelor

Personal background
Hi There!

My name is Norrie. I'm a 50-something-year-old retired insurance manager. My wife Maggie and I emigrated in April to Spain where we are settling into retirement together.

This is the first time I have subscribed to anything like this. It will be interesting to see if anyone out there - terrestrial or otherwise, feels moved to get in touch! It would be nice to have the odd bit of contact with like-minded souls.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
There are few things in life which are certain. The existence of other life forms has to be one of them - the odds are very much in its favour.

Whether we will discover life elsewhere or it will discover us, I have no idea. But one day there has to be contact - and I hope it is in my lifetime.

What a discovery! After millions of years 'on our own' we will have new neighbours. But will we be able to communicate? Will we be able to co-exist? (Goodness knows we have enough difficulty doing so on our own small planet.)Will our cultures and values be similar?

The potential benefits of sharing knowledge with another civilisation, possibly years ahead of us in its science and technology, are unimaginable. So too is the possible danger from contact with or by an aggressive, colonising civilisation with different agendas and culture.

But that cannot stop us looking. Yes, we should be transmitting some sort of beacon - one that provides information on the essential elements of humankind and the other species with whom we share this planet. But without exposing ourselves by providing too much data and revealing our weaknesses.

Seti@home is an inspired means for people like me to make a modest contribution to the 'search for ET'. It gives me a great feeling to be part of the project and I strive to stay in the top 10% of contributors despite my modest kit.

The subject of extra-terrestrial life has always held a fascination for me - and had Jodi Foster not made that trip in 'Contact', I would have been amongst the volunteers!

Incidentally, if this profile suddenly comes to an abrupt halt - they may have landed in our back yard - and we're both off!!
