Personal background
I'm 46 years old, self-employed and have had a life long curiosity about space. I saw Saturn in my first telescope for the first time on November 19, 1969. I have been looking into the sky ever since.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Yes, I think that extraterrestrial life probably does exist. It must. If it doesn't, then it means we don't amount to much more than some kind of natural accident. Although we may some day pick up a signal from another civilization, it may take getting out there beyond our own solar system, farther out into the galazy. I think that is not likely to occur for at least the next 100 years. There are many benefits and dangers awaiting us out in the universe. Benefits would include learning more about the universe than we might not be able to currently imagine from other, possibly older civilizations than our own. Finding other planets that we can explore and compare to our own Earth and perhaps live on as easily as Earth are possible other benefits. At the risk of sounding too much like a Star Trek fan, a big danger in finding other civilizations would be in finding an unfriendly civilization.

I don't think sending a signal specifically as a beacon is necessary. We have been sending out signals for over 50 years already that reflect everything going on on this planet.

I run SETI@home because I am just fascinated by the possiblity of what may be going on out there in space. If having my little computer analyzing the noise out there helps any, then I am happy to oblige. I think the project is a great idea for which I don't currently have any suggestions. Just keep it going.
