Personal background
I'm a software engineer by trade, although I am also currently in law school. I'm originally from Arizona, but now live in Silicon valley.

I have seti@home running on 2 machines at work, both 1GHz Intel machines with win2000.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think ETs do exist, and that the chances of our picking up signals from their civilizations are actually pretty good. The obvious problem is figuring out what actually constitutes a signal and deciphering it. Most likely it will be something along the lines of what Earth has been emitting for decades, miscellaneous local communications that unintentionally propogate out.

I think humans should definitely be transmitting a beacon, although the likelihood of anyone finding it while we are still around is pretty slim. It would be a neat idea to encode as much genetic information about us and other organisms on the earth and transmit it out... perhaps after we've destroyed the planet enough that everything becomes extinct, another life form could bring it all back.
