Personal background
I am a 25 year old male from central PA. I am married, and have a 3 year old daughter. I started running Seti a few days after my daughter's birth, and created the group Seti-Winter named after my daughter (Winter Rose)
Upon graduating from high school in 1995, I joined the US Army as a signals analyst. I spent six years in the Army, and then got out to persue a career as a computer programmer. My hobbies include programming, networking, Unix/Linux, and ham radio.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe it is very possible that extraterrestrial live exists. Drake's equation makes it seem rather certian that statistically it is possible. However, I believe it will be a long time till we are able to find them. It is possible for our nearest neighbors to be so far advanced (maybe using LASER for all communications) or so far behind (still using smoke signals) that finding extraterrestrials looking through the RF spectrum may not be plausable. I think we should certianly continue to search for them since locating other life would be invaluable to us both scientifically and politically. If we find a world more advanced than ours, we could learn from them, and maybe get some cool technology (Maybe a CPU that runs 4Thz!) If we find one other planet, it seems likely that we would continue to find others after that (Just gotta find the first, and it's all downhill from there!!) Forging a friendship with any neighbors we find would help our world to develop diplomatic allies that could be invaluable when we get to the next millenium.
There are also interesting religous implications to life on other planets. Is it possible that Christ's story is also known on other planets? Maybe other life forms know Allah, Budah, or some other deity. Would finding other planets make the existance of God more easy to understand, or would it create a plethora of alternative religions, or even a complete loss of religous faith. Unfortunately, I don't believe we will have the answers to these questions till sometime in the distant future, but we have to continue searching...
