Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
As one of the first registered SETI@home users, we couldn't imagine being alone in this vast universe or not running Seti. Mankind had better transmit while we can, since as a life form, we are always teetering at about two generations from a plunge back to the dark ages (as was recently demonstrated on Manhattan Island). So, if we intend to do our part in maximizing the entropy of the universe, we'd better send out a blast while we still can; or risk sinking into oblivion unannounced.
As for the project, I think it is amazing what a handful of dedicated volunteers and poorly paid staff operating out of a glorified closet has accomplished. You have opened a whole new path for the future of massively parallel problem-solving, unimagined prior to Seti@home. Shame on the scientific community for not heaping praise and significant support on your historic accomplishments.
