Personal background
I'm from Champaign, Illinois, the birthplace of the Mosaic web browser. I work as a Resident manager at a retirement hotel and do freelance web design work as well. I'm happily married to a wonderful woman who shares my interests in life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that it's statistically improbable for life not to exist elsewhere in our universe. What this life might be like is open to all sorts of speculation. If we are able to discover a signal from some other intelligence, it is certain to change the way most people view our place in the universe. As a two-way communication would be impossible, given the distance of even the nearest stars, we can only hope that the signal we discover contains as much information about its origin as possible.
I think that transmitting a "Hello!" signal is a rather nice way to introduce ourselves to our neighbors. Given the vast distances and the sheer volume of space involved, I think it unlikely that another intelligence would find us by "accident". Such a signal should provide as much information about ourselves as is feasible to squeeze into it.
SETI@home is a tremendous effort to give everyone the ability to contribute to the task of searching for our neighbors in space. It's nice to know that my computer can be of use, even when I'm not using it.
