Profile: Howard Owens

Personal background
I am a computer network administrator working for a manufacturing company based in Bunbury, West Australia. Here is a web link to a web site which features some of the towns in my region. www.westernaustralia.net/discover/south_west/index.shtml

I have been interested in astronomy since my teens and am particularly excited by the increase in non-government participation in space exploration (e.g. the solar sail initiative http://www.planetary.org/solarsail/mission.html).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe we should look for signs of extraterrestial life forms however I am dubious whether any extraterrestrial life exists. I have recently read a book by Paul Davies titled 'The Fifth Miracle'. In this book, Paul summarises recent advances in our understanding of biology, organic chemistry and cosmology. He indicates that the chances of the accidental creation of organic molecules of sufficient complexity to lead to self replication are extremely unlikely. For this to happen twice in our universe would be miraculous, and to occur in comparatively close proximity within the same galaxy would be virtually impossible. Here is Paul's web page where you can read of his illustrious academic career and numerous publications - http://www.physics.adelaide.edu.au/itp/staff/davies.html.

I am fascinated by the concept of sharing computing resources to accomplish difficult tasks and so look to a tremendous future in computing technologies following the principles developed for and incorporated in the SETI@HOME project.
