Personal background |
Thirty-four year old computer geek living in the western wilds of Maryland, USA. Computer geek in this case translates as network engineer who has dabbled in database administration, and a little programming over the years. I've managed to cobble together a few computers to process files, my laptop (which does a unit every other day), my desktop machine (which does five a day), my computer at work (which does six to eight a day), and the computer I installed for my mother-in-law. (I provide free technical support in exchange for running Seti.)
Non-computer hobbies include brewing, SCA (www.sca.org) heavy combat, science fiction, Traveller (jtas.sjgames.com), and woodworking. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Sure, extraterrestrial life exists. I'm certain there are probably single celled organisms of some sort somewhere else in our own solar system.
Is there intelligent extraterrestrial life out there? Perhaps. But even if we detected a signal TODAY, it'll be generations before we could even contact anyone... in all likelihood, if we detected a signal today, it would have been created before recorded human history. There is no saying that any civilization that created the signal still exists.
I run the SETI@home software at home for the same reason I buy lottery tickets - I hope to win the lottery, and I hope eventually mankind does discover that we aren't alone. It'd be nice to have some sort of unifying force on which mankind can focus. |
