Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that based on probability and the number of solar systems in the universe it is less likely to not have extraterrestrial life. When it will be discovered is anybody's guess, just about the same as when we find the cure for the common cold. I think we will stumble on it, or it will stumble on us. The benifits of the discovery could be a double edged sword depending on the benovelence of the being. If it is a scientific culture then we will gain a mutual understanding of each other and our cultures, physiology, technology. If it is a militarisitic culture we may be in a fight not dissimilar to the scenario in the movie ID4. Should we send a beacon? I don't think that would be the best idea based on my previous statement, I feel it would be better to find the life forms and determine what type of culture they will have before we make our selves publicly known. I run SETI@home to help with the search, I guess it follows the old adage of put 10,000 monkeys at typewriters and eventually the works of William Shakespear will be produced. Apply enough brute computing force and we will find the signs that will signal that there is the existence of life. Where we take it from there will be up to us.
