Personal background
Hi, I'm Marc and I'm 18. I study Physics and mathematics and want to become a mathematician. My hobbies are reading (science fiction essentielly), basketball, programming and chess. I'm also interested in astronomy and I often stand up at night to observe the sky. My problem is that I need to be astonished every single day, so discovering ET would probably give me enough astonishment for the rest of my life...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Well, does extraterrestrial life exist ? I don't know, but I hope... The problem is to know if we're ready to discover it. Personnaly, I dream if it but on the other hand I'm also scared of discovering other forms of life. Imagine, we don't know anything about life except the forms we discovered here on Earth. Actually we completely ignore what life is, that's not a shame, we only have one sample, here on Earth. But what makes us sure that life on Earth is real life ? Another problem is the contact with other forms of intelligence. Ok, one day, maybe, we'll receive a message from ET. And then ? Will we be able to understand it ? Is it possible to understand it ? And what would be the reaction of the population ? Panic ? Joyfullness ? Anxiety ? See, I'd be pleased to talk with ET, but I know some people who wouldn't. They think we have enough problems here, down on Earth, and they're right. So why trying to understand ET if we can't understand ourselves. But it is obvious that there would be huge benefits of contacting extraterrestrial life. First it would answer the eternal question : "Are we alone ?" but that's not all. Exchanging information would tell us how much we really know about the Universe, about us, about life. It would show us our place in the Universe and maybe the sense of our existence. So there are several possibilities of contacts with ET and a few of them would help us solving the problems down here. But there are also some scary scenarios which would be dangerous for us (wicked ET, the proof of our inferority etc.) The risks are evident, the benefits are obvious so why shouldn't we try ? It will anyway lead to a catastrophy... lol
