Personal background
I am 49 and live in Huntsville, AL. I manage 164 apartments and have a computer buisness. I hold two BAs in Psychology and Theology. Other than computers, I have little time for hobbies. It is good when your hobby and your work are the same thing. My first computer was a mighty 8086 with a raging 640K of RAM and a huge 20MB hard drive and a 1200 baud modem with DOS 3.3. I now have a 1Ghz AMD, 384MB RAM, SCSI Raid, 32MB DDR GeForce2 GTS, ADSL, Windows 2000 Server and a network of 5 systems. Some how I miss the days of DOS when GUIs were unheard of and in order to do anything, you sat a keyboard staring at a green screen.

Much has changed in the past 5 years since the above was written. My current system is a 2.20 Ghz AMD64 Dual Core with 2 GB of RAM and an ATI X1600 Pro 512MB PCIe. My job has changed as well. I am now the Priest of a non-denominational church. I have no conflicts with SETI and my personal spiritual beliefs. Many do. It is very hard for me to comprehend that this small globe is the only life in an endless universe. A multiplicity of life across the galaxies is very consistant with my view of God. I pray, that before my life has reached an end, I will be able to hear and read about...first contact.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I first heard of SETI while it was still in BETA from an email. I signed up and went on line with SETI on May 20, 1999. I was interested in SETI long before I knew there was a SETI. I have always believed that it is illogical that this small speck of dirt called Earth is the only source of intelligence in an endless universe. I believe that we have already been contacted or at least observed. SETI is searching for a signal that I believe has already been sent waiting for us to reach a level of technology to recieve/decipher. If there is a race that is already capable of star travel, we should have little to fear. We would not be a threat to them and should not treat them as a threat to us. The ideas of the "probing" abductions is illogical. A race advanced enough for star travel would have little if any need for "probing" an earthling. If a race sends a signal and is no more advanced than we are, the distance would preclude any sort of threat to either side. The thought/reality of extraterrestrial races does not interfere with my theological views but broadens them instead. We must be willing to learn as well as teach from our first true encounter/exchange. We must rid ourselves of foolish ideas of human superiority and see others as fellows in an unending universe. As much as we are trying to find a signal, we should devote efforts/resources to sending a signal. Others may be searching as hard as we are. I run SETI on 5 systems and will do more if I start a new system. The worth of the program can not be measured. How can value be put on the reaching out of mankind to fulfill our destiny. Our future lies far beyond this tiny speck in a small galaxy and our primitive fears and superstitions must be left behind. We are bound only by the limits of our own dreams. I for one will dare to dream anything.

With the exception of the number of systems running SETI, this part hasn't changed. I will leave it as it is.
